Short Term Health Insurance

Don't go without Medical Insurance.  With the high cost of health care, you won't want to be without medical insurance, even for a brief period.  This type of coverage is great for:

  • Part-time and temporary employees
  • Students and Graduates
  • Employees waiting for group coverage or wanting a COBRA alternative
  • Unemployed Individuals
  • Anyone without medical coverage for any reason

The short-term plan is flexible and helps satisfy your insurance needs.

  1. Choose from a minimum of 30 days to a coverage period maximum of 6 or 12 months.  Pay by the month or coverage period.
  2. Select from various deductibles ($250 - $5,000).  Most people choose $1,000 deductible.
  3. Select your co-insurance level, usually 80/20 or 50/50.  This means after you have paid out the amount of the deductible, the insurance company will split the medical expenses with you.  Usually the insurance company will pay 80% and you wll pay 20%.  There is a cap on the amount for this split, depending on the carrier.
  4. The insurance plan then pays 100% of the remaining covered eligible expenses up to a coverage period maximum of $1 million coverage period maximum per insured.
  5. Pre-admission certification is required prior to inpatient hospitalization or surgery of a member or insured dependent.  If you fail to pre-certify, benefits will be reduced.
  6. Coverage can be effective within a day or you can request a later effective date, but no more than 60 days after the application date.  All coverage is subject to approval of your application and payment of the premium.  Coverage is not renewable and is not intended to be a permanent plan.  Pre-existing conditions are not covered.  Product availability and coverage period maximum vary by state.

Short Term insurance is not recommended as a substitute for a regular health insurance policy.  If you do not know how long you will need the plan, you may wish to consider a traditional policy or Health Savings Account.  If you become uninsurable while on a short term policy, your coverage will end at the end of the contracted period and you will have a difficult time replacing it.  None of our regular plans have a time commitment for how long you keep the policy, so if you don't need it anymore, you may cancel it.  At least you will be able to stay on it longer if you need it.  If you become uninsurable on a regular policy, the insurance carrier cannot cancel you unless you default on your payment.
